Glad to see someone speaking positively about the setting, tone and themes of this movie. A lot of retrospectives just say that the second movie is kind of cool at the end but bad otherwise. My dad saw all of the original movies in theaters and Beneath is his favorite sequel by far, so I've always had a greater appreciation for this one and agree that there are a lot of great arcs going on throughout the film

This has always been my favorite ST TOS episode. And I really enjoyed this video. William Windom gave the best performance of his career. The musical score was the best. Everyone acted with such dramatic effect. I loved it all about this episode.

This was my first Planet of the Apes movie, and that ending with Nova speaking, then dying, our heroes getting shot (as you said) brutally and Taylor blowing up the world has stuck with me. But without the first half, how do you get to the second half?

What people don't get about the original KING KONG (they did before the remakes) is that we come to sympathize with Kong ON OUR OWN - we don't need Ann Darrow to do it for us. As far as she's concerned Jack Driscoll is her prince and Kong remains a beast in her eyes. That's the tragedy - WE see Kong's heart, she doesn't but is instead understandably terrified. This is not a weakness of the film but its strength. It doesn't compromise the gist of the Old Arabian Proverb which is about beauty 'killing' the beast by her rejection, not cuddling him like a teddy bear. In turn, his fatal attraction to her brings his downfall. That's how beauty kills the beast. The original KING KONG is and always has been about unrequited love and its destructive consequences. What is mind-boggling to me is how someone like Peter Jackson who claims the original is his favorite movie could screw up the very core of its story.

Did you folks see Godzilla 54 4K was coming to the Criterion Collection! Just in time for Godzilla's 70th anniversary. I'm really hoping this is a sign of things to come and bodes well for the future. I know Toho is going piecemeal for their 4K restorations...so an overall 4K upgrade of the entire Spine 1000 collection might not be possible or reasonable within the next few years. But maybe Criterion might selectively look at the other films they HAVE done outside of G54(Which would be Rodan, Mothra, King Kong vs Godzilla, Mothra vs Godzilla, Ghidorah, Astro-Monster, Destroy All Monters, Hedorah, Megalon, Return of Godzilla and Biollante) and perhaps consider doing solo releases for some of them, or even smaller multi-film sets to bring them to the collection in 4K. Certainly an all out release of King Kong vs Godzilla, with both cuts restored in 4K, audio commentary by David Kalat on both cuts...that would be well deserved. Return of Godzilla and Godzilla 1985 likewise deserve that same "include both versions, give us a commentary for both versions" treatment. If Toho would go ahead and give Godzilla Raids Again a 4K restoration...then we'd have Rodan, King Kong vs Godzilla, Mothra, Mothra vs Godzilla, Ghidorah, and Astro-Monster as an uninterrupted stretch and they could be packaged in some kind of "Volume 1" set while we wait for more films to be restored. Maybe Criterion and Toho can formally partner on an overall Godzilla 4K effort to get these restorations done and released in a semi-timely fashion.

Did either of you notice the text of the ejector seat's instructions were in German and not in Japanese? Nice bit of attention to detail on Yamazaki's part since the German and Japanese militaries did share some aerial and naval technologies during WW II. The canard design of the Shinden was in part, inspired by Germany's Dornier Do 335 Arrow heavy fighter which had propellers in both the nose and tail of the plane and were fitted with machine cannons and ejector seats.

I love this bleak film, this and the original are they only good ones, the rest and the newer ones are terrible.

I still have a promotional ape city "newspaper'" that I obtained form my local theater upon Beneath's initial release! I'm in total agreement about James Gregory, who's very effectively enhanced by his headgear. (Funny, how bulky he and Zaius are when "naked.") Franciscus/Brent has the most priceless line in the film, when in response to Taylor asking him how he got there, he replies, "Same as you: spaceship, ape city, subway." Multiple viewings of Beneath delightfully enhanced my Summer of 1970.

Have long loved the original movies. The only one that doesn't fully work for me was "Escape". The apes somehow recovered the sunken ship. Managed to repair it and get it flying while living in a society that doesn't accept flight as possible.
